It's been deserted for the past fifty years, but now it's being put up for sale in a government auction for a 99-year lease, with hopes of the abandoned hospital being renovated into a luxury hotel.

The island's reputation for being haunted is based on the historical events that took place there.

Before Poveglia was deserted, it served as a quarantine island for victims of infectious diseases like the plague, so it is known as a place where many people died.

In 1922, the island became the location of a mental institution and rumor has it that one of the doctors performed crude lobotomies on patients after going crazy because of the ghosts, which some say caused him to jump to his death from the hospital tower.

Although it is closed to visitors, the spooky status of the island makes it is a popular destination for ghost hunters.

Poveglia is one of several government owned properties that are being auctioned off in an effort to cover some of Italy's national debt.
