We mentioned in this video that the miners had recently returned after a three month strike, and that tension was high between Welsh and Irish miners. Animosity also remained high between the miners and the labor management.

These miners were not part of the union, they were on strike for better working conditions as well as the amount of time they had to work while on their shifts.

The Stueben shaft in which this fire took place had only one entrance and exit, so when the fire erupted they were trapped without any hope of escape. In our opinion after reading the inquest and testimony regarding the cause of the fire, we believe this was not an accident, we believe the fire was set intentionally.

Anson Dunn, an Irish miner was hired on the day of the fire, he was the last man to leave the shaft that morning, the fire broke out minutes after he reached the exit. Also, the majority of the jury for the inquest was comprised of officials for the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western railroad. Their subsequent findings was that a spark from a ventilating furnace traveled some 160' and started the fire in the shaft...its an unbelievable verdict in our opinion.

The Avondale Mine Disaster of Sept.6th,1869, claimed the lives of 110 miners, left behind were 72 widows and 158 fatherless children. This was one of the largest mine disasters in our nations history.
