Our journey begin at the Hat Creek Vista point which overlooks Mount Lassen and Shasta from afar. That morning we entered Lassen Volcanic National Monument a fog loomed and antelope were on the run. Little did we know by the time we would reach the base of Cinder Cone an extinct conical shaped geological feature in the heart of Lassen National Forest we would be caught in a storm. We will take you to the shores of Butte Lake which at one time use to be a part of Snag Lake however lava flows segregated it and take you on the old historic Nobles Emigrant wagon road which was a route that crossed this volcanic landscape. Back in the day the pioneers thought that Cinder Cone was still active however a geologist in the 1800s found this not to be far from the truth that more then likely it erupted in the 1600s. Cinder Cones are not uncommon however this one which is overshadowed by one of the largest plug volcanoes in the world known as Mount Lassen rose to nearly over 700'. More then likely the first eruption was explosive which caused its red rock to fall from the sky oxidizing in the lava beds forming the Painted Dunes which you will see from afar. The second eruption caused black jagged andacite to cool leaving behind lava beds which can be found along the Nobles Trail. In 1851 there was fire in the sky many of the pioneers thought that Cinder Cone was erupted however studies prove otherwise so what is it they seen glowing from this volcanic land? The climb to the caldera is very steep I was caught in a storm as the rain began to turn to ice, winds were roaring and an eerie fog settled in once I reached the summit. Over the years there are stories of underground aliens, Bigfoot sightings, strange lights in the sky and mysterious disappearances surrounding this vast land.
