The Crawford House Hotel, built in 1835, was the first hotel in Portsmouth. During it's heydays, many presidents visited the hotel. As the Civil War consumed the town, the hotel was converted into a hos for war torn soldiers. In 1970 the hotel was listed on the national historic landmarks registry, just before being demolished. Now, an apartment building, bearing the Crawford House name, stands on the location of the old hotel. It seems that some of the visitors have never checked out.
