The Hartley Colliery disaster was a coal mining accident in Northumberland, England, that occurred on 16 January 1862 and resulted in the deaths of 204 men and children. The beam of the pit's pumping engine broke and fell down the shaft, trapping the men below.

On the 16th January, 1862, 204 men and boys were killed in a mining accident at Hester Pit of Hartley Colliery. The massive beam of the pit's pumping engine broke and half of it, weighing 20 tons, fell down the shaft, trapping the men below, with no other exit. The machine normally pumped 1,250 gallons of water a minute out of the pit. With the pump out of action, the mine began filling up with water and gases. National newspapers reported each day on the miners trapped below ground, and for a few days there were hopes of a rescue. Sadly, by the time the miners were reached, they were dead. Most of the miners were buried at the Parish Church in Earsdon, where there is a memorial to those who lost their lives in the disaster. The tragedy prompted a new law, requiring all collieries to have at least 2 means of escape. Joseph Skipsey, the 19th century 'Pitman Poet', wrote his poem 'The Hartley Calamity' about the disaster. A memorial to the disaster was later built in New Hartley at the location of Hester Pit.

Hope you all enjoyed the investigation and done all the good stuff.
