The Hess Ranch in the heart of Shoshone country is a fine early example of early agriculture in the Austin Nevada area dating back to the mid 1800's. The pioneers who founded the ranch built this beautiful Victorian home and all its outbuildings with there very own hands. This ranch relied heavily on the Reese River, Toiyabe and Shoshone Mountains to sustain themselves. This ranch provided produce, meat, poultry and livestock for the miners of many silver camps in the region. I happened to be offroading to Kingston a living ghost town when I came across this ranch and decided to explore it. The one thing your going to find is that the different structures were built in different time periods which range from wood, adobe, brick, concrete and even aluminum. Even the well is a work of art lined with native stone and hand dug to about 25' in depth. Only one Hess family member is found in association of the ranch buried at the Austin Calvary Cemetery and her name was Helena who was married the ranches owner in the 1800's. Were going to take you on a little journey through barns, corrals, stables, garages, guest house and finally a large eerie Victorian home. The Hess Ranch is haunted but more so its a historic relic facing the harsh elements, vandalism, rats and eons of time. In the heart of desolation this ranch tells a story about life, love, tragedy, struggle and perseverance of those who braved this vast frontier.
