Q&A with the director, writer and lead actor Adrian Țofei.

What is the horror scene like in Romania?
Almost non-existent in terms of feature films. Only three Romanian horror movies have been made so far and Be My Cat: A Film for Anne was the second. There are a lot of other international co-productions that were shot in Romania (like High Tension, Mirrors, Them or The Devil Inside), but that didn't contribute to creating a local horror scene. What I heard though is that there are some indie filmmakers or aspiring filmmakers doing horror shorts for a while, living with the dream of doing a feature, but somehow never succeeding. I believe it's partly because of the film school in Romania. Luckily I didn't attend that school, but from what I heard, students are brainwashed that they cannot do a feature without doing shorts first or without having a lot of experience, expensive equipment, a studio, a big budget, the support of the Romanian Film Center, a big team, connections etc. And on top of that the school gives them the idea that they are not true filmmakers if they don't make Tarkovsky-like art films and that the horror genre is superficial one. All in one, true indie/guerrilla filmmaking is not at all encouraged in Romania and even discouraged sometimes. People tell you very often "you cannot do that" - a very long list of things that you cannot do. Thinking out of the box is not encouraged at all in the educational system, starting from elementary school and finishing with college. And since the horror genre is so much connected to the indie movement, blocking the indie movement kills the genre as well.

Who do you think Be My Cat will appeal to?
Hmm... I believe it appeals to psychological horror fans and found footage fans the most.

Why do you think people like horror?
It's the same fascination that almost all children have with monsters. A mixture of fear and entertainment. The horror genre talks to the child in all of us, that child that didn't understand the nature of pain and suffering, for whom the fear of a monster was not yet connected with the idea of getting hurt, but more with a certain playfulness, excitement, discovery, mystery. When we become adults we start to really get the true horrors of the world, some of us totally disconnect with that innocent way of seeing monsters, but others still find a way to ignore the consequences of horror in real life and have fun with the movie.

Did you ever get any reaction from Anne?
Nope, not yet. :)
