St. Dominic's Cemetery was originally called St. Joseph's the earliest grave found here is from 1859 of a child and a year later his brother was buried next to him. It was around 1860 that a church was built at this site so that Catholic residents of Iowa Hill had a place they could seek eternal rest at. The church nearly blew down in a wind storm in 1864 but the church was rebuilt. In 1922 the church was damaged in a fire that nearly burned all of Iowa Hill to the ground leaving only a few historic remnants behind. In the early 1930's another terrible windstorm struck down the church leaving behind a pile of wood that the locals eventually would take to build new homes. Today the church of course is long gone but their are quite a few graves that were some of the towns first Catholic pioneers who led lives here. Rumor has it the Chinese Cemetery but all that remains are piles of rocks and empty graves. Father Shanhan came to this area to spread faith but it was Father Dalton that dedicated this church and probably held funeral services on these very grounds for most of the interments found here.
