Sardine Peak overshadows the entire Kyburz Flat area standing at over 8k. This journey will take you up to the summit along meadows, forest, cliffs and even past a very large brown bear that scurried away after my encounter with it. Its important to put the area into perspective but from an aerial point of view. For a short time will follow old wagon roads along volcanic vents and eventually up to lookout tower #117 which was built in 1915 then suffered an ill fate only to be rebuilt in 1917 by the CCC. These towers played a vital role in the area as they would often have a ranger living in them who would watch over miles of ridge lines and national forest. From on top of this peak one can see Lassen and Freel Peaks. Also one can see on a clear day the Sacramento Valley and The Sierra Buttes. The views here are timeless if you cannot tell I was pretty excited just to take in the views. Such fire towers were essential to keeping the local boom towns below safe and these ranches found in various meadows like Kyburz Flat.
