La Exaltacion De La Santa Cruz or Holy Cross rather was one of many missions the Spanish had built along the California Coast in order to spread Catholicism. In turn the padres brought disease with them which in turn made the local Native Americans very sick eventually wiping out many of Ohlone and Zayante tribal members. The mission was a full time ranch and far. The natives spent most of their time praying and the other half working for the Spanish such as tending to the cattle and fields. Some have felt that this mission was cursed from the beginning as it has been plagued by floods, earthquakes and even a massive fire. Eventually when their was no longer a need for missions the Holy Cross became a Catholic Parish with a convent, school and a place where others could enjoy its rich cultural history. The third mission that was built on site is a replica thus when I take you on this tour you will feel like you stepped back in a time its rather amazing. This mission baptized more then 2000 natives and signifies one of the earliest settlements in California when the Spanish arrived via galleon and put a cross on this hill. While I wish my video was longer everything was closing up and I was asked to leave so this is a very brief walk through of the Mission and the grounds. One of the oldest walls in the region resides behind the Gothic church which was built in 1889 and restless spirits wander this holy ground because the church was built on top of a old graveyard thus masking all those who are remain forgotten at this rich heritage site which today is a Catholic Parish.
