Established in 1837, Liverpool Medical Institute pulsates with the remnants of times gone by. With tales of mysterious ghostly figures wandering the halls, S.P.I took it upon ourselves to delve into the mysteries of this building of science.
It was reported to us that the Lecture theatre, the main staircase and the library were the three main 'active areas'. We began our ritual of setting up static night vision cameras within each of the highlighted 'hot spots'.
With adrenaline pumping through our veins, the team morale was high as we plunged the building into darkness, which soon grasped us in it's impending fear as we began our scientific experiments.
As a rule of thumb, we always begin by simply asking if there are any spirits that wish to communicate with us. Despite the anticipation of a ghostly response, a sheer psychological fear resonated through the empty lecture theatre as we attempted to rationalise anything that stuck out as possibly paranormal. Although we pondered with different pieces of equipment that monitors the rooms' natural environments, our expectations were not met and no abnormal reading came from any of the devices. Before moving on, one of our team members heard a mumbling coming from the empty space behind him but unfortunately nothing was recorded upon playing back the voice recorders.
As we approached the staircase, where there have been sightings of a man and a dog, we were met with a cold breeze that made all of the hair on our necks rise. Here, amongst other things, we set up barrier alarms. A six degree temperature fluctuation was the only thing we had to report in the hour spent in this area of the building. Concluding that without the partnership of any paranormal activity, we could put down the eerie feeling of being watched to simple psychology. we moved on to the next location.
With foreboding shadows that danced across the walls of the long curved room that was the library along with marvellous portraits of past significant bodies, the sound of the flagpole on the roof above was amplified further with the cool blowing wind which only added to the atmosphere.
The two degree fluctuation could have easily been from the curved glass in the grand dome of the ceiling. It was suggested that we attempt to use an electro magnetic field proximity sensor (known also as a 'rempod') on the outer side of the room. If we did make contact then the sensor should detect the electro magnetic field that all spirits possess thus activating an audible alarm with flashing lights. (It is to be noted that it is very rare for this device to sense anything). We started by asking for the people in the portraits to step toward the device (one name at a time) .
After calling for Richard Caton, Lord Mayor of Liverpool in 1909, the alarms did indeed go off. We continued to direct questions to Richard Caton for two hours and have documented evidence of seventeen occurances in which the rempod was set off. Each time this happened, the temperature would drop by a staggering 5 degrees a few minutes before.
