Devils Peak stands at about 6'600' in elevation as it took on the name of the Crystal Basin which in the 1800's was called Devil's Valley. The peak is very primitive their are no trails and the Rubicon Historic Trail does skirt around the bottom of the mountains rugged 500' cliffs. Their are allot of strange tales surrounding this peak although it was not named after hell but rather because today it is an extinct volcano or rather volcanic vent that at one time had erupted massively bringing an inferno below which is known as Loon Lake today. The peak is full of heavy foliage although as you get to the summit its rather bare except for a small clearing near the summit surrounded by woods where we had a bigfoot encounter at. From the peaks summit one can take in great views of Pyramid Peak, Rockbound, Buck Island, Spider and Loon Lake. Also behind the peak is great views of Guide Peak and a massive canyon where the Rubicon River flows. This peak has some of the best views and vista points of the region. I clipped together portions of our climb and our descent it was not an easy trek but no less it felt like a victory to have reached the top where we would have dinner and I would drink ale on top of the world! If your looking for a bigfoot hotspot that involves rock scrambling, remoteness and great views then I give this peak a 10!
