In ancient times a band of Ilmawi Natives from the Pit River Tribe lived along Burney Creek and performed ceremonies at this beautiful waterfall which pours over its basalt cliffs a 100 million gallons of water a day. The falls, forest and creek were a place for the natives to hunt and gather as nature flourished. In the 1820's trappers came here seeking furs later the ranchers moved on in the area to settle its rich lush lands. Samuel Burney being one of the first settlers in the region died on this land and the McArthur family eventually came here to ranch which in turn a small settlement grew. When PG&E opened they wanted to build a dam at the falls the family sought to save it buying up the acreage surrounding this lost paradise which eventually was deeded to the state to form a state park. The entire region at one time was covered under a layer of molten lava which formed and cooled forming the basalt landscape found around this canyon which resides in Mount Shasta country. Theodore Roosevelt thought this location to be one of the Eighth Wonders Of The World and I have to say I agree that is why its here to share with you one of natures greatest gifts!
