As of today this site contains the oldest structure in all of San Francisco. Not only the oldest structure but oldest cemetery within the city as well. The Basilica only separated by the courtyard was built in the 1900s when the quake of 1906 crumbled the original Gothic revival church. Many of the artifacts found on site date back all the way from the 1700s when the Spaniards came to the bay area to preach Christianity to the natives whom eventually fell to disease, cultural differences and poverty. The mission was self sufficient they planted their own food and raised their own animals until it fell into the hands of the American Clergy nearing the mid 1800s.
