New Chicago is a semi ghost town which started off as a mining camp and today is full of cattle ranches since mining died in this community around WWII. I apologize that I called it old Chicago but technically it is an old settlement dating back to the early 1850's. The town had thousands of residents, dozens of homes, hotel, grocery store, saloon, boarding house and a series of other businesses. Very little remains and what does is on private property which includes three mill sites, few old barns, outbuildings, head frame of the Fremont - Gover Mine which is 3k deep and a homestead that is about it. Most of the town site exist privately on farms and ranches so this is not a very long video. New Chicago lies between Drytown which was Amador Counties oldest mining town to Lower Rancheria a mile away which was home to a bloody massacre that occurred here in 1855. New Chicago had quite a few issues with lawlessness but it truly is one of the more forgotten gold rush towns of the foothills of the sierras known as gold country. During the towns boom years about five million in gold was brought out of its mines. Journey with us as we take a journey in these historic rolling hills uncovering what is and what was!
