Smoke from Tyndall Air Force Base a prescribed burn

A large column of white smoke floats upward near Tyndall Air Force Base and Highway 98 on Saturday. The base is conducting a controlled burn all day.
TYNDALL — Tyndall Air Force Base is conducting a 2,000-acre prescribed burn today.

The fire began at 8 a.m. and is set to last until 6 p.m.

The huge plume of white smoke billowing near Highway 98 caught the attention of motorists and triggered some speculation across social media on Saturday.

The base is using the fire to remove dead and downed trees left from Hurricane Michael.
