The Old Storey Courthouse and Jail were built in 1876 after the great fire in Virginia City. For years its walls had held notorious criminals for example John Milliam who bludgeoned and robbed Julia Bulette a famous madam who was hung on boot hills. Some criminals were hung behind the jail while others that were incarcerated here were widows caught stealing bread for their children. The last prisoners were relocated from here in 1986 not to long after that the jail was turned into the Silver State Peace Officers Museum boasting Walter Gist's collection law enforcement relics particularly badges. The museum boast handcuffs, death mask of John Dillinger, badges, Billy club, hats, uniforms, guns, newspaper clippings, photos and whistles. It might just be one of the finest collections in the US dating back to the 1700's. The clip will start off in the hills of Virginia City on Mount Davidson in Ophir Canyon and eventually ill take you on an exploration that starts at the front of the old courthouse to inside the jail. Included in this clip is an audio clip of the jails history and even some wild mustangs as we are leaving our luncheon after the exploration. Each jail cell could hold up to four prisoners all they had is one bunk bed and many of those held here ended up being lynched when the west was wild. Rumor has it that the jail is supposedly haunted as folks have seen shadow figures, objects moving around, disembodied voices caused by the ghost of Peter Larkin who was unlawfully executed behind the jail, cold spots, being grabbed, scratched and even shoved. This tour is to give our viewers of a birds eye view into what life may have been like here and to share with you some of these policing relics. We encourage others to visit the museum and donate!
