As you reach the end of the national forest you will come on out in an area that has various meadows known as Sagehen Meadows. This basin has thousands of years of history as native Martis and Washoe used it to gather, hunt and fish. Later during the gold rush many lumber camps were established leaving behind foundations, railroad ties, wood, metal and other artifacts. This lumber mill was known as the Old Smith Mill which provided wood to Truckee, Sierraville, Sierra City, Transcontinental Railroad and Virginia Cities Comstock Lode. Today the ties are used to cross the creek while the foundations remain hidden in the woods much like other mills found around the area. One thing is clear the meadows are very brown very little wild flowers are blooming due to drought and it being early Spring. Despite that factor the meadows are muddy and where the reservoir once resided today Sagehen Creek flows therefore with a little luck and a leap of faith our journey would continue on to the shores of the Stampede. Along the way we found a huge rock on a stump and allot of large craw fish shells or as I call them freshwater crabs. Watch Tammy's leap of faith lol!
