Santa Cruz Memorial Park was formed in 1862 when a plat of land was purchased by the Independent Order Of Oddfellows. This unique cemetery is full of many historical figures who came to Santa Cruz to build life's for themselves while some were very successful others met a tragic end as they were put to rest below the cities mission. While some of the children died at a young age in the diphtheria epidemic others were a victim of a terrible powder mill explosion which left 13 young men dead. While it is not the oldest cemetery today it serves as a very historical graveyard with a park like setting along the San Lorenzo River where the Spanish traversed before claiming Mission Hill to be used for there Holy Cross Church. Today the cemetery has many urban legends and rumors such as the haunting of the lady in white, Chinese railroad buried in the cemetery having a building built on top of the graves, shadows, tales of spirits that attack your vehicle and disembodied voices. I am going to take you on a brief walking tour trust me its nothing special but you will get to see a buck and ill take you also to the Swanton gravesite finishing off in Memorial Gardens.
