The grounds you see today are part of St. Mary Louise Hospital and Art Center Retreat. Prior to it being erected by the daughters of Charity the man who owned this land was killed in an explosion as it was called "The Van Bokkelen's Beer Gardens" The wife of John Mackay purchased the property then donating the land to the church so that a hospital in Virginia City could be built which would mainly treat miners who had accidents and injuries.
