#Gunter Demnig about how he initiated the "#Stolpersteine" campaign in Holland. "Stolpersteine" are #brazen #cobblestones that he places in front of houses that were formerly #inhabited by #Jews that were forced to move out during the #Holocaust 1933-1941-1945. The aim of the campaign is to remind people that all this happened right next in our neighborhoods. Gunter Demnig began the project #Stumbling stones in the 1970s and in 1997 in Groningen. Thanks to its #unwavering commitment is the #Memorial now about many countries in #Europe. In #towns and #villages across Europe are on the sidewalk of the former homes of the #victims small pebble with the name and date of the one who deported and murdered. The project started in 1995, and by now there are more than 60,000 stones placed, in 1600 cities and villages in Europe. Remember the stumbling stone also #Sinti and #Roma victims in addition to the #Jews, #political #prisoners, #homosexuals, #Jehovah's witnesses and conscientious objectors, people with a #disability who were killed by #Nazi followers. Demnig artist called Stolpersteine (#Stumbling blocks) the stones "because you stumble about it with your head and your heart, and you have to bow down to be able to read the text".
