7 Princes of Hell
Demonic
Astaroth, Oh poor Astaroth. No one has been wronged more than he. They say he will tell you of his memory of the fall from heavan to hell, and that he certainly deserves to be punished for choosing the wrong side. They say he is unwilling to discuss many other matters when he is summoned until he has told his woefull tale, and then he might share with you his gifts of Math and Science. Some say Astaroth is most powerful in the month of august, and that he is a prince of hell, treasurer of hell, associated with serpents, and that he inspires laziness and vanity.
The name Astaroth is believed to have derived from several different goddesses throughout the ages. The phoenician goddess Astarte, an incarnation of Ishtar of Babylon. Some even say of the Summerians Inanna, and Egyptians ISis, Aset. Yet unlike the beautofil goddess that his name might originate from, many describe him as being ugly. The name “Astaroth” as a male demon is first known from The Book of Abramelin, said to be written in Hebrew around 1458, and recurred in most occult grimoires of the following centuries.
In the Testament of Solomon Asteraoth is mentioned as an angel who is opposed to the demon of power. In Johan Weirs 1577 piece Pseudomonarchia Daemonum it says this of the demon:
"Astaroth is a great and a strong duke, coming forth in the shape of a foul angel, sitting upon an infernal dragon, and carrying on his right hand a viper, who also claimed to rule 40 legions, and had to be approached by the conjurer with a magical ring on account of his stinking breath."
In Dictionnaire Infernal (1818), Astaroth appears as an ugly angel riding a dragon and holding a viper in his left hand. It is thought that this powerful grand-duke presides over 40 legions, and possibly over the East and is treasurer of hell. he knows of past and future events, secret things, liberal arts, and the story of creation and the fall of the angels. He also believes he received an unjust punishment. Some magicians say he procures the goodwill of great lords and can be summoned on Wednesday. He is said to emit a powerful fetid odor, and to endure that, the magician should hold a silver magical ring that prevents odors under his nose.
Astaroth was one of the demons named in the historic Loudun possessions" along with Zabulon, LEviathan, Asmodius, and several others. The Loudun possessions was a notorious witchcraft trial in Loudun, France in 1634. A convent of Ursuline nuns said they had been visited and possessed by demons. Following an investigation by the Catholic Church, a local priest named Father Urbain Grandier was accused of summoning the evil spirits. He was eventually convicted of the crimes of sorcery and burned at the stake. it was said that a pact was allegedly signed between Urbain Grandier and the Devil, stolen from the Devil's cabinet of pacts by the demon Asmodeus.
