There are more than one ghost in this building. The history of the building is that it was used as a hospital during a scarlet fever epidemic more than a hundred years ago. If you go to the old cemetery at the base of the mountain in Thaynes Canyon, you will see the old tombstones with dates from that era, many with the same date range on them and many were children. I worked there for 3 years as the manager. When I started working there, I went in during the day in the off season, to do the liquor inventory. I was the manager of the businesses. I heard someone upstairs walking on the wooden floor several times but there was no one there. One of my employees told me she saw an old woman dressed in period clothing who paced back and forth between the restaurant the lobby, stop in the lobby and repeat the sequence. I never saw her, but her vision substantiated what I heard. On the 2nd floor, as I was locking the door to my office, which was in a room at the front of the building overlooking Main St., I saw a ghost at the end of the long hallway where there were stairs to the 3rd floor. He was a slightly built young man dressed in tattered clothes with his face painted white or he was extremely pale. He was standing there looking at me then made a motion as though he was going to run toward me. I hastily ran down the stairs an made it out of the building. As I walked to my car across the street, I looked back at the building and said to myself, “What the hell was that!” I never went up there or stayed up there late at night again.
The 3rd floor had multiple ghosts roaming around. I had a waitress/maid who was ½ Italian and ½ native American who was very sensitive to these energies. She is the one who saw the third floor ghosts and the old woman in the lobby. The building is built into the granite mountain. You can see the granite rock of the mountain in the basement which used to be the bar known by locals as the Hula Bowl.
I often wondered what happened to the ghosts after Bill White renovated the building into what is now the Grappa. I wondered if they were happy or upset about the changes.
