Behind the scenes notes: Chris just posted how he misses "Movie Night". His reference is to the movie hour he and Brian enjoyed while in their cell. Once a night at 10pm from a mysterious cable outside their room a movie would pump in (Misery, Midnight Express, The Darjeeling Limited, Wonder Boys, and finally Adaptation). These were such fun hours. There was so much around-the-clock activity for a week only a sliver of it could make the final cut. At one point Tommy Venet ("Wood" of Holly-Wood) created a clip of Lucien the slack-sniffing dog talking with human lips, barking, "Let that be a lesson to you!" Adam Blai created a last minute light painting of the prisoners. there was so much extra fun that we enjoyed here behind-the-scenes. A quick note on how the production navigated itself: trial by fire, we just started running and had to produce hourly because we'd committed and so many people were watching. I would film all day and work it as warden / cameraman, and then at midnight I'd sit down and have to edit the footage to post each morning. It was a crazy pace. Chris and Brian, though being great fun guests up for kind of anything, actually were writing a professional screenplay and had to deliver by week's end. When they came to me mid-week questioning if they could finish the goal they'd committed to I was merciless, because I too was on stage here and had to deliver this half an hour completed movie reel by week's end as well. My unwavering response was simply, "Good luck with that." The bottom line and golden rule is always the show much go on. So, by sheer enthusiasm and tidal wave, we all pulled each other along. To give you an example of how wacky, fun, and crazy it all was, just starting the week, after posting the first footage, I was absolutely certain everyone out there was going to vote to give the prisoners beans all day. So, exhausted from cutting footage all the night before, I was simply going to go out and buy a dozen cans of beans. Easy day, right? But no! Everyone voted instead to give them something wonderful! Suddenly Joe Bob and I were running around that morning calling local woman, "Would you dress as a sexy cop and deliver a fine lunch to these two guys on camera for this unusual project in a fake jail we are doing? Please! And we need you immediately." We raced out and bought police costumes. We never knew exactly what was going to be our next move. The next day I was up at the Main Moon restaurant begging them to make me two platters of anything that would look like weird fish. The Mysterious Russian and Chuck the Calligrapher were not planned. They just sort of popped up. The police cars flashing their lights were really out front the hotel guarding the street because of a local gas leek emergency one night. So we had Rob the Plagiarizer quickly run between them so we could grab a shot! It was magical, one hour after another. Brain, one of the celebs on the SyFy Channel's show Haunted Collector, couldn't even watch his new episode because he was genuinely chained up in my second floor back room. I can remember bumping into people around town, like when I went into Mimo's to quick pick up a pizza, and telling them I had these two writers chained in my home and seeing these people's faces go blank with a look of having no idea what I could be talking about. (Insert thought: he's saying something about this pizza is for men chained up in his home.) One person asked Kyle, "Is that even legal?" As a filmmaker, there is an aspect of communion and pure love of the art that is sometimes missing in bigger budget productions. It is off the cuff weeks like this one that fuel my soul, ride purely on heart, and remind me how much fun making movies can be. I can't thank everyone enough for indulging us. -Blair Murphy, the warden
