When the pioneers came to the area they thought that this bowl shaped valley was a Volcano. This was because every morning fog would hover just above the valley floor which that had mistaken for steam. So originally the name in 1848 started off as Soldiers Gulch later changing to Stony Point and finally it remained as "Volcano" which is still used today. Also you will see the old stone amphitheater and the Whiskey Flat Saloon which are both historic. Granted at one time Volcanoes did flow in the area it created many caverns found around the town itself but they have been long since extinct leaving behind hills, white leafy oaks and meadows of tall grass. Nature today thrives in these hills the natives of Chaw'se used the Volcano area to fish and hunting as prior to the white man it was abundant with wildlife.
