Two trains collided on the trestle crossing over the Kaskaskia River at Carlyle, IL. The accident occurred on June 20, 1865. The railroad was the Mississippi & Ohio. The west-bound train was carrying the 6th West Virginia Cavalry to St. Louis for service on the Great Plains. Most of the regiment's horses and a few people were killed in the collision.
