Today, Chacachacare is an uninhabited island, except for the lighthouse keeper. In the 1920s while Trinidad was under English control, the decision was made to isolate all the leprosy patients from the general population. The patients who were able to work were used to build the buildings and work in the garden. Dominican nuns were the nurses and lived in the three buildings on the hill across the bay from the patient quarters. The colony included a movie theater, bakery, cemeteries and numerous churches.
