COLCHESTER CASTLE - FROM ROMAN TEMPLE TO NORMAN FORTRESS.

William the Conqueror ordered the construction of Colchester Castle, and it was built between 1069 and 1100.
The castle was strategically positioned on the route between East Anglia and London.
Due to lacking local quality stone, the Norman builders repurposed materials from Roman Colchester, including tiles and stone from nearby Roman ruins.
The castle was erected over the ruined Roman Temple of Claudius, which had been built when Colchester served as the first Roman capital of Britain.
When Boudicca attacked Roman Colchester, many citizens who fled into the Temple were slaughtered, and the Temple, like the town, was destroyed.
Design and Features:
Colchester Castle’s keep is mostly intact and stands as the largest example of its kind in Europe.
It measures 46 meters by 33.5 meters.
Colchester Castle saw action in battle. It was attacked by King John in 1216 when it had been taken by the French.
Throughout medieval times, it remained Crown property, cared for by a succession of stewards or constables.
By the 13th century, the castle was already in use as a prison, and at times, it held hundreds of prisoners of war in harsh conditions.
In the 17th century, it was used by Matthew Hopkins, the self-styled `Witchfinder General`, to imprison and torture over 200 women - many of whom died.
Today, it serves as a `state of the art` regional museum and has its own uniquely horrid ghostly past.
