THIS I THE FIRST PART OF THIS SERIES THE PILLBOX IN HEMSBY. JILLY AND I DID THIS LAST SUMMER AT NIGHT BUT WE WANTED YOU TO SEE IT FIRST IN THE DAYLIGHT BEFORE YOU SEE THE NIGHTTIME ONE, SO SIT BACK AND WATCH AND LISTEN TO THE KNOCKS AND VOICES I CAUGHT IN THIS WWII PILLBOX.

The World War Two pillbox described above is visible in aerial photographs taken from 1944 onwards. It is not visible on aerial photographs taken in December 1940 and was probably constructed after that date. A small structure within a semi-circular enclosure, visible approximately 60m to the east of the pillbox in the 1940 photographs, and linear ditches visible in the same field, may have also been associated with military activity. Despite their more ephemeral nature, however, these remained extant for some time after the end of the war and therefore seem equally likely to be associated with agriculture and drainage. A group of World War Two anti-invasion defences, including a tank trap, a pillbox, a slit trench, and a spigot mortar emplacement, stood on Hemsby beach, protecting a gap in the dunes. They formed part of a network of defences located along this stretch of coastline: further defences are visible 240m to the north and 180m to the south and the beach itself was protected by lines of barbed wire and beach scaffolding. Some elements of the site are still visible on the beach, although most have been moved and reused as sea defences.
Some are visible on aerial photographs taken from 1940 onwards, while others have been identified during field surveys.
