One of the most haunted hospitals in the US, right here in Louisville KY? Waverly Hills was a tuberculosis hospital from 1910 till 1962. I did this video in 2008 for the owners of Waverly Hills. At the time they were trying to drum up interest and inverters to convert the hospital into a haunted hotel with shops and such. It's an intriguing idea. This is what I came up with.

I used video footage and photos found on line. I was also given access to personal family photos from the Mattingly family who own and run the place. During my production of the video I was given access to the hospital to photograph. It was an amazing experience, walking down the halls, imagining all the people who were there.

As I went through the photos, certain rooms and places stood out. So I re-photographed the exact spot that those shots were taken and re shot them. As you watch the video you will see ghostly transitions of times gone by. Photos from 1922 turn to 2008 and what remains.

Every time I watch it I get chills thinking of the people in these photos. Ghosts of the past. It chills me. I wonder how many of them got out of this place via car and not the body chute better known as the death tunnel. If you aren't familiar, that's the long concrete tunnel where the dead were rolled out to be taken away.

I loved making this video. The black & white photos set to the haunting music i chose. The best part was at the showing. On a late summer afternoon on the top floor of Waverly Hills, they had a presentation. And among the crowd was a frail old woman. A woman who sat in a chair and watched every minute of my video projecting on the wall, hands clasp and trembling. I was told she was a nurse when the place was open. The last survivor if you will. She shed a tear or two but mostly smiled as she remembered the past, pointing herself out in a few of the pics.

I'm not sure if I believe the place is haunted but it sure has an amazing past, an amazing story. Sure while taking pics a few odd things happened but maybe it was just the wind......

They hold haunted tours today and at Halloween have a wicked haunted house in part of it. Check out therealwaverlyhills.com for info.
