Fortress of faith:’ Greenback castle under construction for two decades.

By Kelvin Ray Boyd | Daily Times Correspondent Oct 27, 2013.

Greenback may seem like an unlikely place for a castle, yet there is one located there on Lee Shirley Road. It has been under construction for almost 20 years.

Junior Banks, 67, started his work on what he calls the “Fortress of Faith” in December 1993. The work is still ongoing, and Banks believes divine influence will determine when the work is done.

“I am building this place for ‘The Big Guy’ (God),” Banks said. “I don’t know when it will be finished. I am only following orders.”

At first the work on the fortress began for Banks’ personal interests. “I wanted to be a big shot and live in a (grand) fortress,” he said. “I eventually saw the error of my ways and learned in 2003 that this place was for ‘The Big Guy.’”

The fortress is eye-catching. The exterior of the edifice reaches 25 feet into the heavens, and is around 200 feet long. The interior has more than 30 rooms, some covered with a roof while others are left out in the open.

There are many paintings and engravings inside and outside of the castle walls. Banks said more than 57 images have manifested overnight since 2003.

“The images just started coming up,” he said. “I do have images I have created inside and outside the fortress. All of my art has lines. The other images are not designed that way. I believe these are messages from ‘The Big Guy.’”

The mysterious images appear to be paintings of silhouettes, and then there are also images imbedded in the walls. If a viewer cannot make out the image, Banks can explain it.

There are a few rooms that really stick out, such as the torture chamber room. The torture chamber room is a room within a room. On the wall are chained weapons and images.

“The image of Death is on the wall, and the image of the Devil is in the corner,” Banks said.

Another room of interest has a podium and a small space for chairs. “This is where we have church services,” Banks said. “It was too hot to have them in the castle during the summer, but services will resume in November.”There is a room with a bed made of stone, and the castle has two shelters made of stone.

There are crosses imbedded in the stone floors, with some of the material composed of broken arrowheads. Tombstones, some over a century old, can be found around the exterior. “The tombstones were donated,” Banks said.

A pet cemetery is on the right side of the castle; small tombstones mark the resting place of four-legged friends. A wishing well is on the castle’s left. Pennies are left around the circle of the well, ready for individuals that want to make a wish.
Dolls, statues and all manner of trinkets dot the flower beds around the fortress. “People have left all kinds of things here over the years,” Banks said.

The newest edition to the property is a mini-castle. Banks and his ward, Douglas Freeman, are building the structure out of beer bottles, brick and cement.

There is no admission cost for the fortress, although there is a sign informing visitors “to enter at own risk.”

The castle is open every day and closes at 8 p.m. However, Banks has made special allowances for paranormal investigators.

“I have had paranormal investigators come up here,” Banks said. “But most of them don’t stay until morning. They leave and don’t come back.”
