Caversham Railway Tunnel - Dunedin
On a June weekend in 2022, a few members from Paranormal Research team Haunted Auckland / Paranormal New Zealand took an investigative trip down to Dunedin to look into a few locations. While there, the team took some time to check out the allegedly haunted and decommissioned Caversham Railway Tunnel, the unfortunate scene of at least three reported deaths.
In 1876, a Police Constable Henry Vernon was run down by an oncoming train whilst walking through the tunnel.
1897, 60-year-old farmer, Kenneth Kennedy fell to his death while the train he was on passed through the tunnel.
In 1900, Robert Burns, a 26-year-old assistant guard, slipped from a train in the darkness whilst moving between carriages.
During the Second World War, the tunnel was repurposed for use as an air-raid shelter.
These days, this eerie old railway tunnel sits gated and locked and access isn't possible.
