When Mountain View Cemetery was being formed Jacob Letter purchased two acres of land to be deeded as a Hebrew Cemetery. One of the first things the Jews had done before emigrating to the San Fransisco bay area is establish a cemetery. Many prominent individuals are buried here this includes Simon Argevitch a holder in the Guinness Book Of World Records who could whistle with a mouth full of cigars, Pantoskey and Kahn families who ran major businesses in Oakland, Abraham Jonas a civic leader for 25 years, the parents of Judah Magnes (1st President of Hebrew University in Jerusalem) who were community founders and many more prominent individuals. When the cemetery was erected it led to the founding of Temple Sinai in Oakland in 1875 which was the first congregation in the city and bay area. I kind of stumbled onto this graveyard accidentally while hiking through Mountain View Cemetery. The Home Of Eternity Cemetery is sandwiched between Mountain View and St. Marys Catholic Cemetery. This is a brief tour of the cemetery although it lacks grandiose monuments many of the individuals buried here played a role in the cities local history. I did not know allot of the history when I explored therefore this is just a brief little walk through you can see more on our website.
