Wine Without Borders—Specialty Wine Retailers Association Comments on Maryland Report on Direct Wine Shipping -- Tom Wark

Tom Wark, Executive Director of Specialty Wine Retailers Association (SWRA) explains why states that allow direct shipment of wine ought to allow direct shipment by both wineries and wine retailers—if consumer access to wines is important. Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot recently released a report on the first year of direct wine shipping in Maryland allowed out of state wineries to ship into the state, but not out of state retailers. Maryland Comptroller Franchot's new report used the 2011 Wine Spectator Top 100 Wines as a measure of consumer access. According to his report, 53 of the Top 100 wines were available to Marylanders either in-state or via direct shipment from wineries. Had out-of-state retailers been included as legal shippers in the law, 100 of the Top 100 wines would have been available to Marylanders.
