Mary Virginia "Jennie" Wade was the only civilian lost during the Battle of Gettysburg. On July 3, 1863 while making bread for the Union troops at her sister's house, where she and her mother had gone to be safe from the fighting, she was struck by a bullet that came through the front door and an inner parlor door.

Union soldiers nearby came to the aid of the family, her sister having just had a baby. They moved the sister and Jennie's mother, with Jennies body wrapped in a blanket, through a hole in the upstairs wall to the other side of the house and then down the neighbor's stairs. This was the only way to safely get them to the back, outside door to the cellar. They remained there until the fighting subsided.

We visit the house where she fell and her grave.

Ghost Box session.
