The Missouri State Penitentiary was one of the oldest operating prisons in the US until it closed in 2004. It remained in operation for 168 years. Unit 1 was home to female inmates Katie O'Hare and Emma Goodman. Poor conditions, isolation, and hard labor would make prisoners repent of their bad deeds. Some of the inmates here committed truly chilling deeds to the women inmates. Offered only 1 dress and no doctors for women made this place a true hell. Emma Goodman's son came to the prison walls and played her trumpet music for her to hear. To this day she responds to beautiful music. One gruesome story told was of a woman inmate that helped her friend by removing her swollen tonsils with a razor blade.
The imposing Gothic-style building was designed to appear unfriendly from the outside. On the inside, it was even worse, with cramped cells and miserable, inhumane conditions. At one point, the facility was nicknamed “The Walls” and was also dubbed “the bloodiest 47 acres in America.”
