Morna is a genre of music from the islands of Cape Verde. Mornas are usually in 2/4 time (2 beats per bar) and have a slow tempo (70-90 BPM). The guitarist in the ensemble usually plays a syncopated bass line that anticipates the first beat of the next bar. If there is one guitarist, then this bass line is usually simple, as seen in this video. If there is more than one guitarist in the ensemble, then one of them can play a more lively and complex bass line (bordão), which outlines the chords and creates melodic interplay. Also, one of the guitarists in a morna ensemble usually plays a plucked, arpeggiated pattern which outlines each chord. The harmonic pattern is simple and repeats throughout the song. In this example, the harmony uses the following progression: Em-Am-D7-Em-B7.
