On the morning of February 18, 1944, during World War II, a daring squadron of RAF Mosquito bombers executed a remarkable raid known as Operation Jericho. Flying at an astonishingly low altitude—just three meters above occupied France—they targeted the Amiens Jail. Their mission? To demolish the prison walls and facilitate the escape of prisoners, 100 of whom were due to be executed the following day as resistance members.
Mosquito fighter-bombers breached the walls and destroyed the guards' barracks. They also destroyed a nearby railway to prevent reinforcements.
Two mosquitoes and a Typhoon fighter escort were shot down, and another Typhoon was lost at sea. The raid is notable for the precision and daring of the attack, which was filmed by a camera on one of the Mosquitos. Operation Jericho is a testament to those involved' courage and resourcefulness.
