Brief History
Portchester Castle was originally built by the Romans to serve as a fortified Naval Base. King Edward later converted the site into a fortified burh and, following the Norman Conquest, a castle was constructed in the north-west corner. The castle saw regular use during the Hundred Years War but thereafter it declined and by the seventeenth century was only used as a prison.
