The Pearce Institute was constructed in 1904 and opened in 1906 it was designed by Sir Robert Rowand Anderson, the institute was gifted to the people of govan by Lady Dinah Elizabeth Pearce the widow of Sir William Pearce, who became manager of the fairfield shipyard in 1869 and it's sole owner in 1878.

William retired from business after the 1885 general election where he became the first MP for the new govan constituency, in 1894 a statue of Sir William Pearce was erected by Onslow Ford in honour of Sir William who had died 6 years earlier in 1888.

It was built for the people of govan and included a library, main community hall, gymnasium, reading rooms, workshop's and leisure and recreation.

Lady Pearce always took an interest in the wellbeing of the govan community and it's still thriving today and the people of govan and Glasgow owe a lot to Sir William and Lady Elizabeth Pearce for such a beautiful building.
