Living is challenging, it doesn't matter where you are from. We all have different challenges in life, but living in a ghost town is a challenge unlike any other. There is no electricity, no running water, no bars or night clubs, and certainly no Walmart. But you will find, there is happiness. There is a gratification in life, when what you need to survive is met by what you can achieve with your own hands. Fishing for food, having a well for water, solar panels for electricity. In Canada and USA, most of us can not even imagine this lifestyle, and it saddens me that humanity has lost the ability to "survive". In Puertecitos, people are truly surviving, and happy doing it. I love meeting new people, and learning about their stories and cultures, and my time with Xochitl, in Puertecitos is a time I will not forget. If you are every traveling on the Baja Peninsula, be sure to spend at least one night in this town, and stop to say hi to Xochitl at Las Palmas Market.
Leaving Puertecitos, I was really just hunting for adventure, and this time it was hard to find. I went to Bay of LA, in search of fishing opportunities, but all I found was wind. I went to Guerrero Negro in search of whales, but what I found was regulations. With no other option, I continued south and found myself in the wonderful oasis of San Ignasio. San Ignasio is a town in the centre on the peninsula, surrounded by desert, but singled out by the fact that it is the location of a large fresh water spring. For hours you will drive and see nothing but cactus and rocks, until you are welcomed by the sight of luscious green palm trees. This is where I finally found my adventure. I put the boat in the water and went for a paddle. It was so nice to be able to just float and paddle my way through this spring, with no wind or waves. I paddled my way right to the end, and was surprised to find the source of the spring, and a beauty I can not even describe. I may spend a few days here enjoying the beauty of this place, but I do have a surprise in the works.
