News of the acquisition surfaced early yesterday evening and were confirmed around the net this morning. It was reported that Microsoft plans to connect Skype with the Xbox 360 via Xbox Live and Kinect.

As far as the $8.5 billion price tag... there has been speculation that Microsoft was bidding against Google and the high final price was a result of the competition with its biggest rival. Reportedly, Microsoft might have paid twice the amount Google had offered for the Skype service.
