You've no doubt heard the tale of the Legend of Sleepy Hollow and the Headless Horseman, the story of Ichabod Crane who vied for the love of a woman but was up against the handsomest guy in town when one night he meets head to...no head with the headless horseman and he's never seen again.

This is Sleepy Hollow Cemetery and it's located in Sleepy Hollow, New York which used to be called North Tarrytown. This eerie but beautiful cemetery is shrouded in mystery and ghostly tales.

The spooky relationship between the cemetery and the headless horseman legend is well known.

Sleepy Hollow Cemetery was founded in 1849 on the site of the old Dutch churchyard. The town's name was officially changed to Sleepy Hollow in 1996 to honor Washington Irving and his famous tale.

But Sleepy Hollow cemetery is more than just a setting for a story. It's a place of eerie and mysterious burials. One of the most famous is that of Andrew Carnegie, the Scottish-American industrialist and philanthropist who built the Carnegie Hall in New York City.

Another interesting burial is that of Walter Chrysler, the founder of Chrysler Corporation.

Other famous people buried here include William Rockefeller the brother of John D. Rockefeller, Elizabeth Arden the cosmetics magnate, and Brooke Astor the philanthropist and socialite.

Another legend involves the grave of a little girl named Leona who died in a fire in the early 1900s. It is said that if you leave a toy or trinket on her grave she will play with it and move it around. Either this story is just a legend or I got the name wrong as there are only two Leonas buried here, one being THE Leona Helmsley and neither of them were children when they passed.

Some visitors to the cemetery have also reported hearing strange noises, seeing apparitions, and feeling a ghostly presence around them. Whether or not these stories are true, the eerie atmosphere and haunting beauty of Sleepy Hollow Cemetery make it a must visit destination for anybody interested in the paranormal.
