Are the spirits referring to a scandal that took place before tbe Civil War? There was a scam that took place prior to the Civil War. A man traveling through the area claimed there was a machine that could see through the Massanutten Mountain and that there was either gold or a treasure buried there. He convinced a number of people from the area to invest into purchasing one of these machines. Needless to say, he left with the money and never returned.
Richard Bear, a veteran of the 10th Virginia Infantry, owned the Jennings House after the Jennings family. He died in 1900, perhaps in that house. Is he telling us about the Scandal?
