Subway Cave is one of the largest and most accessible lava tubes in the country. It was formed thousands of years ago when lava flowing for over 16 miles across the Hat Creek Valley area cooled on top while molten lava flowed below. As the lava tapered off it formed a series of smooth lava tubes or cave systems all underneath Lassen Volcanic National Monument Park. Although this clip may be brief or perhaps dark ill take you through portions of the cave where you will see a volcanic lava bubble, lavaicicles and may other portions of the cave. The cave runs about 1,300' in length containing areas such as Stub Toe Hall which has a pumice floor, Devils Doorway, Lucifer's Cul-de-sac and the Sanctum. The local Astugewi tribe who founded this place believed that this cavern in was the lair of an evil spirit. Over the years such lava tubes were thought to be the home of Alien Beings, Bigfoot, Lemurians, Atlanteans and underground UFO bases. Nobody knows for sure but the tales have existed for hundreds of years including a 1940's magazine publication which talked about two men who entered a similar tube and came across some advanced civilization. One thing is certain Subway Cave is small in comparison with the hundreds of miles of lava tubes which reside much deeper below this geological wonder. We welcome you to enjoy this journey as this is about as cold, dark and lonely as it gets inside a lava tube that looks like you entered the city transit!
