In July 1952, the United States Air Force sent jet fighters on multiple occasions from New Castle Air Force Base to respond to UFO phenomenon over Washington, D.C. These events would later be known as the UFO invasion of Washington.

One encounter took place around midnight when two F-94 Starfire jet fighters arrived from New Castle Air Force Base over Washington. The pilots were flying quickly towards a group of unidentified radar blips they were tracking. What was strange was that the instruments in the jets were detecting that they were very close to the unidentified objects, but the pilots weren’t visually seeing anything outside of the radar screens. Suddenly four white glowing objects appeared on the horizon. As one pilot reached maximum speed, he stated that he gave up chasing the objects. When the pilot was asked why, they said that there was “no chance of overtaking them” and that the objects were too fast for the aircraft. Albert Chop, press spokesman for Project Bluebook quoted a conversation during the incident: "'I see them now and they're all around me. What should I do?'...And nobody answered because we didn't know what to tell him."
