On one hand, the Puritans are famously associated with the colonisation of America and also that of the persecution of women accused of witchcraft.

Having been earlier victims themselves of persecution by the state and mainstream church, they later showed the same intolerance towards other Protestant groups not aligned with them.
Additionally, they also wrought terrible desecration to English protestant churches deemed `too Catholic`.

One fringe group, The Ranters, were always at odds with the conservative elements of Puritanism for their licentious attitudes to sex and nudity!

It should be mentioned that not all people of the Puritan faith were so disposed to support this bigotry, as some groups were openly appalled by these practices.
On the positive side, they introduced formal education to the USA and built Harvard.

This documentary examines all aspects of the Puritans, or Independents, as they preferred to be known. It examines their beliefs and those of others within the context of the Age of Reason and the earlier Renaissance.

Shot entirely from a former Puritan chapel in the heart of the Suffolk countryside, it provides a beautiful backdrop to this fascinating story.
