It’s not unusual to see something strange, inexplicable, or hard-to-believe in a war. The very nature of war allows for all kinds of startling sights, most of them presumably unpleasant, plenty of them fascinating or incomprehensible. Those of us who’ve not been in a war are most likely grateful not to have seen the things a soldier has, as even age can’t erase those striking visions from the memory bank. The “Foo Fighters,” however... Those might’ve been something to behold. They too were strange, inexplicable and hard-to-believe, but they had nothing to do with bullets or battlefields. They’re a relatively minor blip on the radar of World War II, didn’t sway the outcome of the battle one way or the other, didn’t choose a side or even participate... That we know of... But for the men who did see them, the Foo Fighters certainly left an impression on the old memory bank, because what they were, what they wanted, how they were able to do what they did... could not be explained.
