In this video, I trace the history of the Hammersmith Ghost from its first appearance in 1803 through to the last time it materialised, in 1955.

Throughout the dark winter nights of November 1803. newspapers began reporting that a dreadful apparition was making nightly appearances around the fields, lanes, and churchyards of Hammersmith to the west of London.

So bad had things got by January 1804, that a reward was offered to anyone who could lay the fearsome spectre once and for all.

In consequence of this, groups of young men, armed with pistols and rifles, began roaming the lanes around Hammersmith by night.

One person who joined the ghost hunt was 29-year-old Excise Officer Francis Smith.

On the night of January 3rd, 1804, Smith was out searching for the ghost in Hammersmith's Black Lion Lane, when he encountered a 22-year-old bricklayer by the name of Thomas Milwood, who was wearing his usual work attire, , which consisted of white clothing.

Mistaking Milwood for the ghost, Smith shot him dead.

He was arrested for murder, and was tried at the Old Bailey in central London.

A few days after the shooting, the "real" ghost was discovered, and we reveal his name in this video.

However, this didn't spell the end of hauntings in Hammersmith.

In 1824, another spate of ghostly activity occurred in the district. This lasted until February 1825, when the culprit was brought to justice.

For over 130 years, the people of Hammersmith could sleep soundly in their beds, without fear of their nighttimes being disturned by ghostly activity.

But then, in 1955, a local newspaper broke the story that the Hammersmith ghost was due to appear in St. Paul's churchyard on Wednesday the 3rd of August.
