The year was 1865 and in the heart of the Arthur’s Pass National Park the Otira Stagecoach Hotel was constructed to meet the growing needs of the gold mining industry and ever increasing population growth. Restoring this grand old lady to original is the passion and dream of the staff and builders. Antiques throughout the hotel and outside many stagecoaches and horse wagons, The hotel is recognised as a museum and there is so much to see, as every room and corner is filled with antiques and bric a brac from the past. Eight rooms, each with their own unique furniture of the era. High beds with valve radios, patterned toilets and hand-basins and beautifully restored ornate furniture. Taxidermy, Quirky oddities and vintage curiosities are scattered around the hotel, on shelves and in display cases.
Then there’s the resident spooks that make themselves known from time to time. Visiting mediums have picked up on them; staff and those staying a night or two have encountered them.
We stayed a night in April 2021.
This is a compilation of video footage from our stay to document this eccentric old hotel that oozes so much character. If you’re ever passing through Otira, make this a stopping point. Even for just a coffee or a feed.
